How to retain all healthy nutrients and store what you make.

Steaming fruits and vegetables is the perfect way to retain their natural, fresh taste and all their healthy nutrients. Boiling is likely to reduce the amounts of water soluble vitamins and antioxidants in foods, particularly the vitamins B and C.

Using the Braun food steamer in combination with the Multiquick hand blender is a simple, healthy way to preserve the goodness in all the cooked fruits and vegetables you prepare for your baby and toddler.

Storing what you make

It is most cost- and time effective to make batches of food for your baby and freeze it. At the early stages of weaning, ice cube trays with fitting lids make perfect containers for portion-sized fruit and vegetable purées. As your baby's appetite grows you will need to store food in larger, freezable containers with lids.

Tips for storing food:

  • Only use a freezer that can freeze food to -18ºC in 24 hours
  • Always reheat foods until they are piping hot. Allow to cool and test temperature yourself before serving to your baby
  • You should not refreeze food that has been defrosted, except for raw frozen food that has been cooked
  • You should use or dispose of frozen baby food within two months of freezing it
  • Do not freeze bananas or avocados

Defrosting and reheating

When you want to feed your baby, take a portion of your frozen baby food from the freezer and leave it at room temperature for at least an hour. Then heat through thoroughly and cool as appropriate for your baby. If you use a microwave, make sure you stir well as it heats food up unevenly and could burn your baby's mouth. If you are defrosting fruits to be eaten cold, then you can leave in the fridge overnight to defrost. Never re-freeze foods that have been frozen before and never re-heat baby food more than once.
